At the Théâtre des Arcades on Thursday 26 March at 8.30pm, Lorànt Deutsch revisits the history of our language in a lively and passionate one-man show, combining erudition, humour and historical allusions.

After Paris et les routes de France, Lorànt Deutsch takes another look at French history, this time examining... our language. First surprise: the ancestor of French is not Gallic but ‘Roman’, the Roman language derived from the Latin of Julius Caesar, the conqueror of Gaul. Over the course of invasions and conquests, this Latin was enriched by contributions from all sides, before becoming the triumphant French of our philosophers, so highly prized in the courts of 18th-century Europe.
