This exhibition compares printed fabric featuring characters with comic books from a historical, technical, graphic, structural, and iconographic perspective, seeking to highlight the many similarities between the two media.

Although at first glance Toile de Jouy and comic strips seem to be two very different forms of artistic expression, a comparative study reveals numerous links between them. Although distinct in their functions and medium, printed fabrics featuring characters and comic strips are both heirs to the same visual culture and share a common goal: to tell stories through images, one on canvas, the other on paper.

To illustrate this dialogue between printed fabrics and comic strips, the exhibition presents more than sixty textile and graphic works from the collections of the Musée de la Toile de Jouy and important loans from public institutions and private collections. Several pieces from the Cité de la bande dessinée et de l'Image in Angoulême and the Conservatoire des Créations Hermès can also be found in the exhibition.
